Girvan’s Story: A Community Film Project Celebrating Local Heritage
Thanks to a £500 grant distributed by Girvan Town Team in partnership with the National Lottery Community Fund, SURF (Scotland’s Regeneration Forum) launched “Girvan’s Story,” a youth-led media project capturing Girvan’s character, heritage, and ongoing regeneration.
The grant helped cover costs for professional media guidance from The Iris (Ayr), allowing students from Girvan Academy to script, film, and edit a 20-minute documentary highlighting local landmarks, community projects, and memories from residents.
The project brings young people from the Academy together with various community organisations and local professionals to create the film, empowering and equipping young people with new skills and confidence.
The film will hopefully be shared with the community at the Girvan Arts Festival in 2025 as well as at a screening in Girvan Academy and any other community events where it will be relevant. SURF will also look to share it on an online platform, and sharing with South Ayrshire Archives for posterity.
As Girvan undergoes a period of regeneration, the aim is to create a recorded document that captures Girvan as it is now; interspersed with memories of Girvan; and with an outlook to what the positive future of Girvan could be.
