Merchant Navy Day Service takes place in Girvan
On September 3rd, 2024, the community of Girvan paid tribute to the legacy of the Merchant Navy with a heartfelt ceremony by the harbour. The event took place in front of the Merchant Navy and Seafarers Memorial on Fisherman’s Green, a fitting backdrop that stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served at sea.

The ceremony was initiated by the poignant notes of a young local piper, whose music signalled the start of the service. Organised by Girvan Town Team and Girvan & District Attractions, with funding support from Girvan Community Council, the event saw a gathering of residents, dignitaries, Merchant Navy representatives, and members of various local organisations—all there to honour the legacy of seafarers who have played a crucial role in local and international history.
Peter Henderson welcomes everyone to the service
Former councillor Peter Henderson opened the proceedings with a warm welcome, delivering a speech that captured the essence of the occasion. He spoke of the enduring importance of the Merchant Navy, not just in times of war, but in maintaining the lifeblood of trade and communication across the seas. His words set the tone for what was to follow—a series of reflections on the resilience, courage, and contributions of the Merchant Navy.

Gerry McGeever, Chair of the Glasgow & Clydeside Merchant Navy Association, followed with remarks that further underscored the significance of the day. He highlighted stories of those who served, drawing attention to the often-overlooked sacrifices made by merchant seafarers during times of conflict and peace.
Councillor Alec Clark was one of several local dignitaries to share their thoughts
Local dignitaries and the Rev. Liz Crumlish also shared their thoughts before wreaths were laid on the granite memorial, accompanied by a Piper’s Lament from Angus Hamilton. Peter Henderson and Simon Voce, Girvan’s Harbourmaster, then raised the Red Ensign.

The ceremony concluded with the hymn ‘Will Your Anchor Hold’, a fitting end to a service of reflection and remembrance. Attendees were then piped to Girvan Town House for tea, coffee, cake and conversation.
