Girvan’s Colourful Community Bunting Goes Up
At the end of March, Girvan became all the more vibrant thanks to lengths of cheery bunting strung across the town. Colourful flags now wave in the wind from Stumpy Jail, around the harbourfront and along the promenade. This is in addition to lengths of bright bunting previously hung across Chalmers Arcade and shorter lengths donated to local businesses to display in their windows.
This isn't just any bunting though, it has all been handmade by the community using donated materials. Local individuals, groups and organisations worked together over the winter months to create an incredible 1321 metres of bunting!
The idea came about after previous plastic bunting began to degrade and it was suggested a more environmentally friendly alternative was found. A community bunting group was formed, meeting weekly at Girvan Library to cut, iron and sew donated material which would otherwise have gone to landfill. The bunting group also helped to coordinate other organisations and individuals who wanted to contribute to the project.
However, some funding was required to purchase binding and tools to complete the bunting. Girvan Town Team was very happy to be one of the organisations that supported this green community-led initiative by providing a share of the funding required.
With the assistance of Ayrshire Roads Alliance and South Ayrshire Council, the bunting has been hung across the town and will stay up over the summer. It is hoped the bunting will continue to be a seasonal feature for years to come.
Lengths of the community bunting can be purchased from Girvan Tourist Information Point, 25 Knockcushan Street. All proceeds from sales will go towards future repairs and maintenance.
